It seems as if, on some cellular or even genetic level, an organism realizes it's too deficient to be a useful member of the community, and realizes it shouldn't reproduce. Of course, the organism's brain only registers this as "LET'S JUMP OFF THE ROOF IT WILL BE AWESOME."

So the organism hurls itself off the highest thing it can find, in an effort to sacrifice itself for the greater good - to leave more resources for the better-equipped or perhaps leap into the mouth of a predator to buy the others a chance to get away. This normally would be a thing to avoid at all costs, but the deficient one's brain is wired so that it only feels happy in its suicidal task.

CRONCH - and the gonads are destroyed. The deficient organism may not have killed itself, but it has, at least, tried to guarantee that its genes will not be passed on.
