With a risk of earning 'dunce of the day' title: did Phelps really say he's consuming 12,000cal per day..?

I'm sorry to say this, but after seeing few of his interviews I got to a conclusion he's not the sharpest tool in the shed.

As far as this video goes: it's always thrilling to see fat people eat.
Something like watching hemophiliac juggling swords.

Multiple sites seem to confirm the same "diet" as he has -- lots of carbs, proteins, and slow burning fats. Due to his physique, they say he burns 1000+ calories per hour when he's training, and with a 5 hour regimen + his natural metabolism, I wouldn't doubt what this says.

I honestly couldn't imagine eating 12,000 calories per day. I'm not thin by any means, but I don't think I've come close to that number very often, if at all @___@

First of all, no sport burns 1000 cal per hour no matter what "internet doctors" say.
With his height, weight and physical activity level I put his BMR (basic metabolic rate) somewhere around 3000cal per day. In addition to that he'd need about 3000 cal more to obtain the training level without losing any muscle mass.
That means quality carbs as a fuel for creating ATP (energy), protein for muscle regeneration and poliunsaturated fats distributed in 6 meals.

When you're well informed it's much easier to ignore the online 'wisdom'.

Apparently you have never been swimming.
That is the quickest way to burn calories.
I used to be on the swim team in high school.
I think we used to swim almost 2000s in three hours which burns you out.
I'm not sure why but when you swim your body pretty much burns like it's on fire.
I've had friends who had to pretty much get out the water while we sprayed ice water on them to cool them off.
With his speed he probably does about 5000 an hour or so and if he does the fly when he trains he can easily burn 1000 calories.
Its all about if he does that though.

Twice a year I compete in olympic length triathlon and a whole track (swimming, cycling, running) burns 400 INTAKE calories per hour. By intake calories I mean carbs you've put in your body on purpose cause you don't wanna waste your muscles.
So my point is: yes, I have been swimming.

That's not EXACTLY how it works guys. If you eat like him you won't be able to swim like him.

It is true that he eats that much, but he also has an amazingly high metabolism, trains several hours a day and doesn't eat just junk food, like chocolate syrup on waffles... he said so on nbc

To Nika,
I'm pretty sure someone who's enough of an athlete to be competing on that level is capable of keeping track of his diet- regardless of what you might think you know about him from watching a couple 2 minute interviews. The only sad thing here is that you check this often enough to post here 3 times a day instead of using your apparent intelligence to do something worthwhile.

"Nika needs a life" its funny that you say nika needs a life instead of checking these posts but here you are reading all of them. Nika phelps is just a freak of nature, and his stomach is a black hole. And its not that he's not sharp just he has HADD. (hyperactive attention deficit disorder). I on the other hand get paid to look at all your comments and must say does anyone know how many times he pooops a day?
