I take back all the comments I made to this point about we as humans being the superior race over AI. Also, I will be hiding in a saferoom, waiting for the upcomming robotwar to pass by. >.>

I actually was a little disappointed. I didn't' think it performed all that well compared to the humans. Especially considering it has all the answers programmed into it and is connected directly to the buzzer.

The challenge isn't in the computer knowing the answer, the challenge is in it understanding the "question". It's made even harder by the fact that Jeopardy questions aren't phrased as normal questions. That field of computer science is called natural language processing.

Natural language understanding is sometimes referred to as an AI-complete problem, because natural-language recognition seems to require extensive knowledge about the outside world and the ability to manipulate it.

Yes, it's totally hard for a computer to recognize words when they are spoken in different ways, by different people, and it must also be a challenge for the AI to understand the sentence and find an answer to it. Also, the AI will have to wait until the question has fully been spoken, for it can really understand it, and the human competitors can read the question. For that sake, killing humans in a war is a piece of cake for these robots.

The computer has to mechanically activate the buzzer as well. That's what that metal tube on our left of it is.

I had no idea there were any AI systems in existence that could process natural language so fluidly. It's just a matter of time before we have relatively intelligent artificial companions for the elderly (or for anybody else). This could revolutionize personal computing, too.
