The pilot was like "hey, I can handle this"...then the flame surrounded the canopy and he was outta there!

Yeah, I was surprised that he rode it out for as long as he did. Seems like in most of the plane crash videos that I've seen, the pilot ejected almost before it looked like there was a problem.
