I think there's probably a lot of truth to this. It's definitely a good strategy to appear to be "among the people", as it were. For instance, statistics have shown that a very large portion of Americans pronounce Nuclear "nuke-yeller" - so why would he pronounce it properly, if his voters don't? I think that, to an extent, is on purpose.
