I remember the "Get off the net, I need to use the phone."

And also using the old windows explorer "history" (that saved everything on page so next load would be quicker), to play web games without connection.

I'm pretty sure that mute option came with either 56k modem or Win 2000, cause I definitely couldn't shut it up before that.

I have fond memories of getting up at 6.30 before school to check my email and waking up every person in the household, and possibly nearest neighbors.

You could usually adjust the volume in the Windows Device Manager, even turning it off. I did have at least one modem that was impervious to those settings though and continued to blast at maximum volume. SCREEEOOOOOOOOOOOGGGSSSSSHHHHHH

I have fond memories of direct modem to modem games of Duke Nukem 3D and even played a game of Quake through a serial cable. Oh man, does anyone else remember coaxial network cables?

There was a time when I could listen to a modem handshake and tell what speed the modem was and what exactly was happening during the connection and authentication process.

My friends would come over, hang up their waistcoats and gather in the parlor, where we'd listen together to whatever new modem the steamclanks had finished down at the old component mill. I say, it was a gay old time indeed.

Ah, the good old times when it was virtually impossible to hide you're online. Talk about the ultimate parental control.
