    Back in the ancient times MrMiyagi used to be a bit of a gym rat and was about 20 pounds heavier with more muscle and less fat than he is now (damn you sweet sweet twinkies).

    Contrary to those who have already posted have noted he is in fact doing a valid close-grip lat (latissimus dorsi) pull-down, only most people do it facing the machine and not with their back to it.

    For that reason alone, and for your viewing entertainment, perhaps the machine got angry and decided to give him the beat down.

    Correct and strict movement and not 'cheating' in addition to some proper gloves and/or chalk help with preventing accidents like this in most cases and gives the most useful results.
