They probably have two, and one of them is trying to reach them on the phone and drag them to a coffee place."

I had a moment like what you, nika, are describing in the first line this very evening.

My brother is on "only" one social networking site, which is strictly a Danish thing, and I don't use it. I actually heard myself say "Dude, why don't you have like a facebook or a myspace or something so people can reach you".

I feel more and more like the lost brother from Spiderman2099 who's got his brain hooked up to the internet. But hey that guy had a flying car with bleach-blond floozies in it, so I'm not complaining!

Twitter makes me angry. I honestly don't care what people are doing all the time. The only reason I have one is my ex made me get one. The link to this video will be my last "tweet"

I understand the family part, but communicating with friends like that really doesn't make sense to me.
For example, if read that hiking invitation on someone's twitter I wouldn't take it seriously- if someone wants to go hiking he/she should call, text, send a mass email.

The other thing I don't get is when someone tells me how facebook is ' oh such a great way to reconnect with people from elementary/ high school'.
I'm in contact with just about every person from that life period that I want to be- I grew apart from the rest of them for a good reason and I have no urge to summon them back and give them insight into my life.
    They are strangers.

"Just found a parking space." "Just enjoying my first sip of coffee for the day."

    Big deal!

We don't kneed to know EVERY mundane aspect of people's lives. Now, when used as a tool (properly) social networking is a great way to stay in touch with friends.

"Hey, I'm going hiking today, anyone want to join me?" I like that one, it's (A)informative (B)an invitation. Rather than make 20 phone calls, you can make one message.

BUT, the whole "I've got hundreds or thousands of followers" ego trip thing is silly.

People just loose their minds with social networking. The only reason I'm doing the whole Twitter thing is to understand how it works when I'm teaching. Not really getting all excited over it, to be honest. FB's cool. My family is spread out over several time zones. Great to share photos, especially for grandparents to see grandkids etc. For that, it makes a great tool.

But hanging out in FB is NOT hanging out with your friends/family.

    /end rant

i dropped my space about 2 years ago, when i got a job and could afford a cellular. at this point, friends can contact me one of three conveinent ways: phone/text, instant message, or email. if none of those ways work, i suggest THROWING YOURSELF OFF A FRIGGING CLIFF

    I agree with nika.
I never understood the fun of telling people what you are doing constantly. And i won't lie, yes I have a myspace for my band.(I won't give the link, because I find it annoying when people do that).
I check it out once in a while to upload songs and other things.
    Its not that fun.

The point when I realized this civilization is going down the drain is when I couldn't reach my good friend on the cell for days, and then he finally sent me a text: 'Why don't you make that facebook account already so we can communicate *normally*'..?

Tweeter, facebook, myspace- someone has to remind the people obsessed with those social networks that in reality they do not have 569 friends.
They probably have two, and one of them is trying to reach them on the phone and drag them to a coffee place.

That said, it can be great for people with the agenda: bands, artists small companies etc- cause it's a good way to keep the public updated about their work.
