I'm pretty sure that the sign causes even more accidents, I mean, who wouldn't be a bit freaked out if the sign bleeds and STARE at it.

I had to look into how it was done because, like Pokey I was most interested in the hows. The ad company Colenso BBDO explained that the rain only triggers a sensor that turns the billboard on. The red water is already red and held in a reservoir. It drips down the board to a pan at the bottom (you can see this in the video) and is recycled.

This isn't the only shocking ad from this company.

my dad went there recently he never saw one of those billboards pretty cool.

Pokey: it is probably solid red die that dissolves on the rain water and runs out through hole in the add.

There's no need for billboards like these even with people driving poorly. Studies have shown that shock ads for meth, cigarettes, alcohol, pregnancy etc. do not work. For meth it was shown to actually increase curiosity in youth.

If people would adapt their driving to the weather and road conditions, there would be no need for billboards like these!

Oi!VanillaMonkey!, this wasn't in America...it was New Zealand.

That said, I agree that it is about time politicians stop using fear to gain power.

I love it when higher ups shamelessly manipulate the public via fear. Don't you think America is scared of it's own shadow enough as is? There is probably a better way of going about increasing public awareness but I think this is just the easiest method.

a billboard with a childs face that has realistic bleeding effecs on it would make me cause a car crash just from seeing it...

I like that their stated goal is "to create maximum awareness through unease".

I thought NAMBLA had copyrighted that slogan.
