I hate this game. I was determined to win with the help of cheating and it wasn't even worth it. >_

I've seen this kind of problem before, involving a farmer, a fox, a cabbage and a sheep...
one boat, operated by the farmer
there's room for only one other thing.
fox+ sheep = bad
sheep + cabbage = bad...
That problem is a lot easier...
Funny thing is, its not actually so hard if you use the right way of thinking.
Instead of just fiddling with the raft and focusing entirely on the mother and father, you should use 'If-then' thinking.
You'll narrow down the possibilities that way.
For example. At the beginning you can conclude that you cannot sent either the father or the mother with only one of the kids, since the remaining kid would be hit by the other.
And you can send them both, but you'd also have to bring them both back or the kids will be unprotected against the returning parent. So thats useless.
As such the only possibility is to send the cop first, and he naturally must take the thief with him. However, he DOESN'T have to take the thief back if the thief is all alone. Allowing the cop to return, and take someone else with him. After all since the cop is returning as well, the thief can't harm him. Naturally the cop cannot take one of the parents, because the other would hurt the remaining kids. So he must take a kid.
Then he must also take the thief back because else the thief will hurt the kid.
And so forth.
Its really a case of, if this, then that thinking.
The big problem I think for most people is how to get that last kid across. The trick there is a matter of thinking 'How do I get that raft on the other side'
Hint, the police is your friend here. Remember you can leave the thief all by himself if no one else is there for him to harm.
This family needs counseling.
It was fun, took me a few tries but i got it, the hardest part was not reading evolution's spoiler when i got stuck

chewy's got it right. Leave the whole family behind or sink the damn raft with everybody on it. Save us the trouble of keeping this family together especially when they'd obviously rather kill each other instead.
