I didn't do anything until I had 70 points saved up (ate a hotpocket downstairs while game was running)
Started in China so it was naturally airborne, then I sold fever, bought almost all resistances (drug first) and all transmissions, and left again. When I came back all except for Greenland Madagascar and Peru were infected and I had 67 points, So I bought a few deadly diseases, and everything that dehydrates, and won on 05-10, didn't go past T3 though.
lol, didn't even try really, maybe I'm just naturally talented at this whole eliminating mankind thing.

also i'm convinced now that the rate at which your virus kills people is a huge factor... i only started killing people around 22 08 2008 on that one... so it seems you should be able to kill people even faster
They are I've been kind of slackin with my strategy, trying to make the most lethal combination of symptoms... I'm convinced that some are perfect for each other and some negate the effects of others... like coughing and pulmonary edema... coughing would help to flush the build up of fliuids in the lungs thus negating or at least making pulmonary edema less threatening but sometimes I think that's too much strategy to use...
almost gotcha, RM. My 273,600 was in fact a bacteria. It even finished a day ahead of yours, but I was unlucky on Japan :(

Yeah i got some from tier four for that one... I don't want to give away my entire process but patience is the key for sure... I'll also say that it's easier to get higher scores on relaxed than hard...
There are benefits to selling your main infection method at certain points in the game, too...

Good one RM! I stated I've had higher, but I havn't breached the 250k mark yet ever.
Just had an interesting game though: was unlucky with infecting canada, even though entire US was sick and borders open for 2 days. then a vaccine came around, with about 200-800 people uninfected in most countries. I ended up with an entirely cured planet, with a few dozen ppl alive in most countries - but i did it before October - so I still scored 212,000 :D

Finally the whole world destroyed in a respectable score :D
It seems like this game could be a lot sweeter if it was more involving... More things the player could control like, special points, special achievements, etc...
All you want to do is infect all the world except 3-0 countries and then kill them all as fast as possible... Sweet advice btw, thanks.

i just entered a 223,167 highscore (rank#2). Ive had higher, but this is like the first game I played after finding your site and installing rankosaur. seems most need a few ponters on this game.
let me debunk 2 myths right off:
There IS a lot of strategy involved!
Madagascar IS infectable - i manage about 1 games in four - but it DOESNT MATTER.
the highscore i upped even had madagascar AND australia alive. i remember a game where i killed the earth entire, but only got 180k points. why? becuz i ended the game by 17 oct. 2008.
the highscore I posted finished the game on 2 Oct 2008.
understand how scoring works... many diseases will kill the entire world - how to determine the better one? Speed, of course! I had a game with the entire world infected but no kills yet. let it run til 2012 and bought EVERY available upgrade plus got 5 traits. score? a measily 14,000 pts.
I won't spoil it all by posting my entire strategy, but here's a few pointers:
- dont sell your first symptom too soon - let it help speed your development for a while.
- parasites may be easier to handle, but you must learn how to handle the quick virus types for serious highscores.
- again: dont worry too much about freakin madagascar. those few extra dead dont ammount to much. in fact, its a terrible starting place.. better to have one with many bordering countries with many ports and airports near.
- everyone here seems to agree you shouldnt attract attention before your virus has spread - but most don't follow their rule. any transmission type you add gives governments something to react to - filling the newspapers and scaring uninfected nations. virus spreads fast anyway. why not try getting by with resistances only? timing and selection are key.
- study disease types: pulmonary edema i.e. ups lethality and infection with zero visibility... definitely way better than rats or other crap that leads to frontpage headlines.
-mind your timing: ideally, your disease spawns quickly in the newly infected countries but not too fast, lest your starting countries panic too early, making unwanted headlines.
-find the right killing mix to finish the game fast.
these tips should help you at least finish before christmas 2008. for a decent highscore, you must be done by october.
This is bullcrap. This game cheats. Has anyone ever infected Madagascar without starting there?
THIS IS A GREAT GAME, does anyone else feel slightly guilty after they play this? 'cos I do.
Well I managed to infect everyone in less then 43 game days. PURE LUCK on the realistic play. I started in cuba and it gave me free airbourne under the name of catching and coughing then i stocked up on resistances. the world just fell without me doing anything else. i just saved up and got kidney failure and everyone was dropping like flies. greenland died so fast all its ports were open. plane and ship. i laughed. it took me 143 game days (on fast speed) to win. 104545 was my score. What i do not like was this game they gave me 3 unwanted symptoms when i bought teir 3. i sold them all resulting in slow points for fun traits like heart failure and hemorage.
Harmless is another one... a very annoying achievement to obtain...
Does anyone know all the achievements?
I've gotten Apocalyptic, Ablaze, Blood letter, Famous, Cured, Immune, Biohazard, Bloody Vomit(might not have been exact name), and Durable... I may have gotten more but I can't remember some of them... It seems the only way to get them is if you let the humans last long enough to grant them to you; or you have to have them when you start off...
I got the Famous, Apocalyptic, and Ablaze achievements. IT was going to be four years till they made a vaccine. And it all happened in under a year. End score was 61237. I no comprende the scoring system

And the Disease "Shenanigans" prevails as the leading threat to humanity :-P... I saw that guy on the leaderboard as well... Who would want to cheat though? I mean obviously you can't get 9999999999 without cheating...
that guy on the all time high scores had to have hacked the website or game i mean who can get and absolute perfect score on this.

i finally killed all humans! like those guys said, beating the game is not worth it for the points. but it does gives you a sense of satisfaction that your hours of work finally paid off and that you have completely wipe humans off the face of the earth... :)
You'll need to purchase upgrades once you manage to infect a large % of the population. Basically, anything that has a chance of causing death is good.

I think speed of infection combined with kill rate gets you a higher score. I too wiped out everyone just now, but my final score was only 61K. Nothing exciting happened otherwise and no big bonus.
what were your scores when you won? was there a bonus for winning? or is all about the number of people killed?
the other thing i tend to do at first is to SELL my first symptom. this means its basically a harmless disease, and i go parasite ebcause they have less visibility and also they tend to mutate to overcome a vaccine, which is awesome.
I infected the entire world this morning. It is true that you want to infect slowly so you can get the whole world without people noticing. Then when every place is infected you upgrade to kill.
However, you don't have a lot of control. There isn't much you can do to determine where and when your disease gets spread so infecting the whole world, especially Madagascar, depends just as much on luck as anything else. Sometimes you get everything, sometimes you don't.
the key to getting madagascar is to infect as slowly as possible, i got it last night, managed to infect the whole world then upgraded to instant death and accidentally killed the only 10 people in argentina who had the disease so noone else got infected....then they shut everything down, then my computer died. so in all, it was a good run. basically, if you don't infect the whole world, just restart.
I got lucky, somehow. Madagascar shut its ports but I watched a ship sail into its port and infect the island. Unfortunately, Peru was left as the sole survivor.
Madagascar is uninfectable... Unless maybe you start there. Then you'll always see you'll miss Cuba or Greenland.
Plus, how can they move against an invisible disease?
This game needs much more work.
So basically... if a major pandemic breaks out that decimates the world's population... I'm moving to Madagascar.

beat it. best bet is to get rid of all symptoms, make is air/water borne get up to at least 3 drug resist and just keep adding carriers and resistances and wait eventually madagascar falls
ARGH WTF? no matter HOW discreet i try to make my attack, SOMEBODY closes all ports before they get infected, EVEN WHEN MY DISEASE HAS NO FREAKING SYMPTOMS ARGHHHH!!! Personally, I think the person who made this game made it unbeatable on purpose to make a point. lol.

because Madagascar seems immune to all diseases(nothing i do works against it) when i got every single other country.
my strategy was to try to infect every country with raising a fuss and try not to make their airport, shipyard or border close before their infected. this is because i believe that once a country has been infected, its as good as dead. because then you can turn the symptoms up and slowly kill them all.
heres a good strategy-
start as a virus in easy mode. keep your visibility down to almost nothing at all times, by only buying fever, diarrhea, pulmonary edema, hypersensitivity, kidney failure, heart failure and encephalitis at the most. at the beginning, buy airborne, waterborne, and insect transmissions, and upgrade drug resistance to the max, and if u have any points left over upgrade cold, water and heat resistance by 1 or 2.make sure nobody knows about your disease at first. as your lethality, and infectivity grow, you can progressingly buy visible symptoms, try only to buy them after slaughtering the smaller regions.
