The trick is to focus on one corner and keep adding webs to it and eventually a bat will fly in. The first things that you should eat are: Queen bees, Fireflies,moths, and if you are desperate, Bats. Your welcome for the tip. ;)

Well, I finally ate a fraking bat. I started out with 4 seperate webs on the corners, I think I got that trick from another comment, which worked pretty well but then started to slowly connect them & work towards the middle. It ended up kind of looking like a Native-American dream catcher.

How in Manbearpigs name am I suppose to survive wave 8, I basically lost my entire web to the swarm of butterflies, and then it said stage 9 humming birds....When do you reach the bat? I must reach the bat before manbearpig or the world as we know it will be gone.

I was doing really good. Then four stag beetles showed up and destroyed my entire web. I built a new one. An army of bees show up, and everything else stops spawning. Then the bees break my web, and I die. Argh. I'm done.
I finally got a bat. it took me a cuple tries tho. yay!! ^^

yep, a luck based element exists in here. I have earned 587k from my about tenth attempt, while 9 previous end up at some 200-8k, once I got screwed at level 2 (!) because stupid flies kept avoiding my web. I don't remember I might not earn even a 'fly trap' that time :)

All hell then broke loose because ding! queen bee level. I decided to quit and not make anymore web because most of it fell down, I then died eating 4 queen bees and a bee to finish it. And that wasn't even 2 minutes past when I got the first queen bee.
Hey Jonathan, you should expand your corners at something like level 7. You might look at Ivo's strategy for a good example how to do it. I have started with one big web first, then evolved to corners, then managed to get a full circle (once tho) out of 4 corners.
That tip about small webs in cornors helped at first, but in the end it got me less points than one giant web did. =/

Hello AndyZoo, wow I didn't think that the crash point is earlier. Maybe there's a problem of other software running in the background? I must say I have ruined the clipboard service and the antivirus while playing, because I had to use the browser for some work, and was intensively using both, as well as surfing the net when getting tired of web weaving. Or maybe that's because my comp has 768M memory, and yours has less, so I can play longer without the flash occupying the whole of my physical memory.

Hi vesperbot, yeah you do need to be patient. I've been playing this a bit over the last couple of weeks and the browsers crashed 4 times now between 350 and 450k bit tedious when it takes an hour for 100 thousand... :(
Tried both Firefox and Explorer, maybe /i should try Google chrome see if that's any better..

AndyZoo, I think that starts to be a patience challenge, I ran out of it when I checked the scoreboard and found that I'm ahead. Also there could be a problem with the browser, my FF3 ate some 700M at the final point, though remained stable, I don't know whether it would last much longer.

so... after several unsuccessful attempts and one still ongoing, I have discovered the source of the hanging bugs problem. Sometimes the game engine allows you to place a second strand that connects the two same joint as does the first one. If you attempt to cross it with a load balancing strand, the game hangs for several seconds, suspending the browser as well. I suppose that it's the conflicting between those two strands which one should be the first, or it might be an attempt to draw a precisely zero-length strand and calculate its angle in order to store at the joints. After those several seconds of hangup, the game resumes at normal pace, not allowing you to build the conflicting joint, and afterwards the bugs will persist in the air until you reload the SWF into the browser by refreshing the page.
I'm planning to draw a picture of a strategy like Ivo did, so he would be able to test it and compare.
it appears that the game lags the most while the spider is moving across the thickly laid webbing of 10+ strands very close to each other, also it lags about that whole webbing hanging out there. Once you get your web ruined, the game stops lagging. For some reason the game lagged me a lot when the spider was about to lay a strand among lots of other strands being very close, sometimes the delay was horrendous, about half a spider's life. For some reason the first bat that came into my web was about level 16, all of them flew way above the webbing, by that time I had like 20k score. I have learned a good strategy off these comments and improved it a little, so I am now at 120k and still alive, just bored. Thanks for the game, I am enjoying it at my best, but could it be somewhat harder after level 20? I have heard that the 'donation' bugs were thinning after that point, seems that those which are in the main flow are enough for me to not to starve with my web covering some 20% of the area with a webbing so thick that no bat can break through at any point they flew so far, not speaking about everything else.
eating a bat is ez... just dont try to fill up the whole screen with web, use half of it or do like me and leave a big whole in the middle and just collect around the edge. its enough to stay alive and not to much that you get overwhelmed and your web completely falls apart. the only hard part is rebuilding if one of your corners gets knocked out. it can be a challenge to get a good structure back in there during the heavy attack by bugs

omg dude Azated r u a moron if u dont put web in the middle the support is weaK EVERY 1 BUILD IN THE MIDDLE TOO ur right about the edges but not about the middle cause if u hav too many gaps if a stag beetle or a queen bee hits one of the edges wheer the gap is the whole thing will crumble

Love the game. Just a few tips, have ALOT of support webs. Pick a corner in the start and make loads of diagonal support webs before fortfying it, then continue onwards with 2 other corners. NEVER build in the middle.
With the last corner, reserve it for only golden webbing for later levels. When you lose a corner, make it golden as well.
man! i got everything except the bat i had about 63 lines in the half the bat just broke right through them all.
OMG! i finally got to the bats and then 3 attacked my net in like 15secs and distroyed it all -.-
It took forever but I finally got a bat. I think that I got something like three birds and maybe two bats along with countless dragonflies, bees, flies, and ladybugs before I died. Really fun.
How is it that ALL my webs collapse at the SAME TIME and I am left with zilch?
For any newbies, one trick for staying alive longer is to construct a web only on the 4 corners & leaving the center of the screen blank.
That way, when a corner web collapses, you'll still have 3 other webs to work with. Also, with the center open, it'll allow some bugs to fly freely thru & keep your webbing from getting overwelhmed by a large weight of accumulated bugs. This will also buy you some time to be able to construct a new corner web whenever one is disintegrated.

I'm lame at this game 'cause I've gotten past the Stag Beetles only once, and just barely. They always manage to hit my web on the main support web line, and knock the whole thing down.

There's a sweet spot in the middle between starvation, too many captured insects, and too complex of a web. My technique allows you to build webs that are complex enough to crash the browser, so you have to be restrained, but eat fast so you only keep a few butterflies, a stag beetle and a dragonfly in reserve.

I've finally figured out a good net strategy. Your web picture really helped, Ivo! I tried to copy it almost exactly but my browser crashed three times. I eventually found a good mix that caught three bats before it crashed my browser, AGAIN.
This game rocks but you should make it so you can choose what bugs come at you or a difficulty like easy medium or hard.
I played this a couple days ago on Kongregate and ate a bat without too much difficulty. Now they've got a badge for that, and I can't even get past queen bees.
I hate beginner's luck.
sign.. got like tons of moths on my web.. it took me abt 2 min clearing half the area when another 5 fireflies appear.. to think that a web that could hold 2 stag bettle on the same area crashing due excessive moth number.. even dragonflies's speed can't help me..

I made a web on the art mode that was basically just a scribble, and it took 116 bees to completely destroy it.
Yeah ! Sorry IvoLucien, I used your tips and advice then adapted the strategy a bit to suit me. Seemed to work OK. You're right though the game could use a bit more variety later on, but that's what being a spider is all about eating the same old stuff over and over.
It's an excellent game for a hungover Sunday but it came to midnight and it was time to switch off..Tooo tired.

I didn't think I'd get a bat but I actually managed it by chance. 24531 points. I don't know how much the bat gave me but that's my highest personal rcord. ^^; Those queen bees are horrible pains in the butt though.

My net survived 1 bee queen 2 shiny fly's and dozen of bees and fly(shiny fly folowers) net got minor damage =P but in 2nd time when this happend my spider died from poisoning (really too many bees).

What I don't like about this game is the way your entire web can collapse all at once if you reach a certain critical mass.
Also, it feels like it'd be relatively simple to make a bot for this game; everything is just clicking on a location and priorities are easy to sort out.

So...Many...Moths! I hate those things! They are homewreckers.
When things get complicated later in the game, Arachnophilia will hang for short amounts of time, then start working again *IF* you don't click all over the place once it stops responding. If it slows down to a crawl or freezes, don't click on anything, and it will usually (under Firefox 3.0 anyway) come back again just fine... Until it needs to calculate a change in your web again.
Wow, sorry Tasha. I'm using Firefox 3.0 under WinXP sp3, with a dual core 1.8GHz CPU and 2GB of RAM. I had more problems with crashes before upgrading to firefox 3, if you haven't already, I'd suggest doing so. It's much more memory efficient and (so far) very stable.
Also, I should emphasize that the corner web in the last panel of that 'tutorial' is too dense, and caused my machine to briefly hang a few times as I finished it. Somewhere about halfway in between the density of the 2nd to last and last corner webs would be best.
... I always get so many flies that they ruin the whole web and then I don't get any...
but if I pass that the bird comes and tares the whole thing apart in one hit

Admittedly that's only one part of the whole strategy, but I think it's one that's hardest to describe in text.
Another aspect of the game that's challenging, in a subtle way, is making sure to not build *too much web* since the game slows down based on web complexity and number of bugs on screen. Early on you need three corners, then later you only need (and can handle) two corners. Have fun!

the way to catch a stag beetle is to make alot of webbing so that atleast five strands of webbing are attached to it, then kill it. have a good time, hope you win.lol

WoW, this game isn really hard, all u hae to know is that u build all over the map in beginning, but eave one corner completey empty, and when the beetles come u make that corner in yelow web only.
Aftr that u let everything be destroyed so u can do the same to the other 3 corners, the best made corber u stack butterflies and dragonflies and eat the rest rapidly, only build new web when u got a complete corner destroyed and build it again with yellow and u can go on forever.
what kills u tho is the lag ... my spider stopped moving at 144k even tho i had all 4 corners and lots of food ... oh well u have to make huge pauses to avoid it i guess i only had 2 short.
newguy is right. tou can last alot longer if u just protect the corners. doont use the middle at all. alot less bugs will hit your net,and you wont get ovwe whelmed, and u will last alot longer.
btw eirc, i think the order is flies, lady bugs, bees, stag beetle, fire fly/moth, queen bee, dragon fly, butter fly, humming bird, the bat.
What are the order of bug I know it got Fly then Ladybugs and so on but what are the order of the bugs..

I've been playing for an hour or so the last three nights (pausing and continuing the same game), but have to reboot my computer for work purposes today. I was at 422k as of last night, so I took a screen capture, then played for a bit to see how long I could survive without maintaining the web. I finally starved at 445k, but could have gone indefinitely.

Wow, this game is awesome. It has all the elements that a game should have. It has good music and good effects. It has a good storyline, and it helps us be more aware of nature. It is suitable for most people - it has a lot of random clicking for those people who like action games, and it also requires some thinking, planning, and engineering skills. It is also very addicting.
mr admin guy, i enjoyed this game, it was fun but very frustrating. could you please put a continue option that will refuel my health and webbing and will reset my score or something? if so i will be happy. thanks in advance.

the bees can take out massive amounts of web and u almost never catch them, and fireflies hit in packs with 1-4 at a time aargh! i play this a couple of days ago and got a good score for a noob almsot got a bat but now its impossible cos if u eat 3 fireflies the last one gets the whole web
Oh, and the main reason that it's very hard to get scores beyond a certain point (60-120k depending on your machine) is that the game starts lagging horribly. My highscore (171k) took almost four hours to achieve, but I played it as 5 or 6 separate sessions, with long pause breaks while I did other things.
Each interconnected section of web has some sort of overall strength, beyond what the red stress lines show you. If you have too many things on that overall section of web, the whole thing can vanish when the "final straw / dragonfly" lands on it. The suggestions that talk about doing corner webs allow for one (separate) section of web to be destroyed and leave you with one or more sections of web remaining. ^_^

Make the web in corners only... 2 corners will do. Forget about remaining web. Keep eating everything that gets caught in web (eat fireflies & queen-bees quickly!).
15k... not a big score but ate a couple of bats and would've probably survived for quite long since I stashed up some lady bugs & flies in a corner. Careful where you keep this stash as you don't want to weaken the web too much... in a corner right next to tree is a good spot.
And when waiting for insects, keep weaving and clicking on flies to form your queue. If something urgent (firefly, queen-bee, bat) comes along then hit space to break the queue so you can eat that first. Forget about centre bats, the easiest to catch are the more "tree-side" so bide your time and wait for those.

actually sarah your wrong. A great strategy is to totally avoid the center of the box and get the corners and sort of make a circle in the middle with no web in it. Thats the big mistake that beginners make is trying to fill the whole area with the web but you have too many captured bugs that way and eventually they overwhelm your web and it all falls apart and its impossible to recover. Ive gotten 100,000 before but i could get way more i just stopped because it was getting boring since i had been playing for like 2 and a half hours.

Died when the web disappeared and I couldn't move my spider. I was saving the yummy hummingbirds and bat for leftovers... Ah well, another time perhaps.
This score was achieved using an orb around the outer edge of the screen. There is a way to overlap strands very close together if you get a very narrow angle and join strands away from endpoints. Have fun!
I got 2 dragon flies b4 i died my advice is keep ur center REALLY STRONG AT ALL TIMES then branch out. P.S although fire flies attract alot of bugs eat them fast...2 many bugs totally wreak ur web thats what heppend 2 me!

Hi I tlayed this game and it's great, problem is, im terrible at it, can't even get past the queen bees, acually, so I was wondering if it would be possible for the creator to add a causal mode to it, a mode where you have infinite web or health, or both, but you won't get any points, this way even those wo aren't all that good at this game could get to see the bat and sutch, if you added that this game would be perfect in my opinion, more perfect then it already is, that is
hmmmm, i noticed that the web falls appart when the middle intersection is destroyed, so my suggestion is to make a strong middle web, instead of protecting a corner.

ok the scores just went crazy insane... it took over an hour for me to get my 75000 score... I don't even want to know how long it takes to get 300 000!

no i think that happened to me but it might be when there are bugs on the web and when it is was destroyed they seem to stay there. I had to build a string to them to eat them because one was a firefly and the moths killed me.
mhuzzell, if you're experiencing glitches make sure you've updated to the the latest version of the Flash Player. If that doesn't help, we might have to blame your computer :)
After about an hour of play, the game always seems to start freezing up and malfunctioning... insects get caught in the middle of nowhere, for instance -- which is pretty annoying when they're fireflies or queen bees. Does this happen to anyone else, or could it just be my computer?
lol cool game gets a bit boring though lol i got 100,040 but i thought it was first lol becuase for some reason my highscore board was old. oh well lol
It was a nice game, but it just never got any harder. The bugs came pretty much at the same rate at Level 41 as Level 10. I only stopped because by that time I was bored out of my mind.

oh man i am so hungry! got 85 000 at 1 am last night, dreamt all night about vector flies getting caught in my web (and that continuous munching) and with bleary red eyes made it to 130 000 this morning and decided 'alright, i've got an essay due tomorrow, and i'm hungry, i'll just leave my web, no more fixing and see how far i get'.. 45 000 points later and i figure i can always come back next week and see who's up the top =)

Afiag - You might say this is an Alaskan spider, because I'm Alaskan myself. But lots of the enemies in the game, including stag beetles and humming birds, don't live up there, at least as far north as Fairbanks, where I'm from.

mhuzzell - As you found out, to fix the crashing you can upgrade to the latest version of flash. I'm afraid I can't help you with the mis-clicking problem, though. I think playing in full screen is your best bet.

Lol. I didn't have trouble feeding the spider, i had trouble eating all the bugs!
This game is awesome (one of very few I've ever been good at!), but it keeps closing while I'm in the middle of playing. The first time, internet explorer froze, when I was at 17-thousand-something. I downloaded the new flash which seemed to fix that.
Then, playing again, I accidentally clicked on the 'Dig Your Own Grave' headline bar, just over the top of the game, and it redirected me to another page -- I was at 73-thousand-something points. It happened again just now -- when I had 115-thousand-something!
Is there a way to fix this, besides playing in full screen?

i really like this game and find it extremely addictive. for me the best strategy was to construct a "C" shaped web around the edges of the trees, ignoring the middle other than the occasional travel line from the top of the C to the bottom. I ate three bats!!!
I'm assuming that this spider lives in Alaska during the dark months or something, because daylight never comes. That, and I doubt a spider could eat several bats and hummingbirds all in one night. [Among the insane amounts of insects.]
Yay! I've eaten two bats the last time; Total of three of the whole gameplay - Not the same day, of course ...
Of course, two Queen Bees came by, my web turned out to be too small in the end, and no bugs on it ... So I couldn't replenish my life in time. And no other bugs come by when a Queen Bee's on the web. So bad luck for me ...

I am very impressed with this game. In my opinion, it is very well designed.
It is original, simple, and educational without sacrificing entertainment value. The interface is very streamline and intuitive. Most people think simple controls are a given in flash games, but I can point you to many that are not so sleek in their interface. I especially like that you can que your moves ahead.
The game itself is very simple with clear instructions and clear explanations of what the enemies do. The designer didn't try to add too many upgrades, abilities, or meters to watch. There is definitely power in simplicity and I think a lot of game designers forget this.
Choice is the essence of strategy and this games offers a lot of choice. You can build your web in any way and eat the enemies you catch in any order of your choice. The only random element is how the enemies spawn, which doesn't downgrade the strategic element and is good for replay value. I'm sure there are only a few strategies that are really effective, but at least the game lets you explore and experiment on your own to find them.
The difficulty curve progresses in a nice linear fashion consisting of the introduction of new enemies, all sporting different abilities, with each new level. After all the enemies have been added then the game attempts to overwhelm you then, when failing at that, starving you. And, trust me, it will starve you at some point.
In my opinion, one downfall is the length of time it takes to play. The difficulty curve is very good but plateaus after the introduction of the bat until it starts it's linear progression again when the game begins to starve you around level 23. The starvation should kick in a sooner to shorten the length of the game and make the difficulty continuously linear.
How the enemies stack when they hit your web is also important and I think the enemies that hit later should stack below the enemies that had hit before them. That way moths wouldn't cover up fireflies, for example, so you could eat them before things get too out of hand.
The last, really nit-picky thing, is the que line when you are building a new web strand. It really shouldn't be broken. The line should be solid blue, or another bright color, because sometimes I make really short web additions and no line appears because the unshaded part of the broken line, not the blue part, is the one that is marking the addition. That makes it look like I did nothing at all.
I apologize for the long comment. I like to talk about game design in an educational fashion. I'd love to hear other opinions. I look forward to a sequel.
Was going for 100,000 but clicked on a Queen Bee when I was at low life and died. Just goes to show you have to be careful where you click sometimes.

But that spider bites more than he can chew. I mean, a small spider the size of a ladybug eating queen bees, dragonflies, beetles, bats and much more? I find it weird how much this spider can eat.
My epic web was catching too many bugs that i couldn't eat fast enough, so it just all fell
ok this game is definitely cheating, becasue everytime I get going, an entire swarm of who knows what shows up, and takes out my entire web, so i dont have any food or webbing and I die.

Yeah. Tends to be a messy-web - But I was going good and long in the last one. Until there were a bit too many Lightning bug, and a mass of moths destroyed my perfect web ...

M'hm. The corner-webs are doing me good, except when it comes to Queen Bees, Dragon Flies, and other large, strong animals they tend to break them down easily ...
Making 4 very strong mini-webs in the corners is definitely the way to go. At least that's what got me as far as I did. Even if 1 or 2 go down you still have the others bringing in some food. Don't worry about making them look nice. Just build them as messy and as strong as possible. You can expand toward the center once they are stable enough.
Your eating order is very important as well. I always eat fireflies first, because moths are a pain in the ass. Queen bees are second, because the bees spawn toward the middle of the area and not where the queen bee actually is, unlike moths with fireflies. Bees come next, because for as small as they are they put an abnormally large amount of stress on the web. Then after that I eat things in decreasing order of size that put the most strain on my web: bats, hummingbirds, dragonflies, beetles, and moths. Butterflies toward the end since they take so long. Finally lady bugs.
I actually don't eat the flies at all if I can help it. They put hardly any strain on your web and they are great to save when you are about to starve or need more web to build. I will only eat them for clean-up if they get way too messy or congested.

So far I haven't really stuck with a web scheme, I just kinda make it one big mess. Initially I do tend to go for classic web style, since obviously it works for spiders in real life.

By the time I had died of starvation I had eaten 2 bats. Here's the thing: You're always going to get enough bugs to eat, until around level 22 where they start to increase the time between the good bug spawns. Your little web is like insect grand central station. The real problem is all the stress that is put on your web. You just can't eat fast enough and keep up the maintenance. Here's a tip: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
