Smooshi and Phil

Smooshi and Phil
Smooshi and Phil

An amazing interspecies relationship formed when Smooshi met Phil Demers. Smooshi is a five year old female walrus at Marineland in Niagra Falls, Ontario and Phil is her trainer. But Smooshi thinks of Phil more as a mother, following him everywhere he goes. Or maybe she thinks of him as a boyfriend, since she won’t let any women get close to him.

    @topmonkey
    While I was peacefully showering one early sunny morning and singing "I want to break free" (lol), Ginger, my 11" scolopendra gigantea decided to make a break for it.
    I ended up chasing her around the apartment wearing only running shoes and thick protective gloves, carrying a large empty nutella jar.
    Since then my neighbour from across the street offers me a ride (and I hope that means his car, lol) at least 3 times a week.

    :P

    This is a sweet story now but in 5 years when Smooshi gets to be 2500lb, somebody is accidentally going to get hurt or killed and as a result, Smooshi will have to be put down. Although born in captivity, Smooshi is a wild animal and should be treated as such. This relationship is too close and dangerous.

    Being around animals calms me down too- except for the time when my giant centipede got out of her tank somehow while I was in the shower.. Running around naked around the apartment with a jar in my hand significantly contributed to my stress level.

    That was cool. I wish a walrus would follow me around, just not all the time like that.

    Why do news people have to be so stupid? At the end the guy makes some inane comment that the doctor isn't insinuating that Phil smells like a walrus. What a dork, just read the news.

    That said, I love animals. Being around them calms me and gives me a connection (corny I know) Whit God and nature that I very much enjoy. When I see a video like this it makes me jealous. I want to be an animal trainer! Alas, I have a mortgage...
