B-boy Mr. Rogers

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood is a lot more surreal than I remember it, though that probably could be said for a lot of children’s television. In this episode, Mister Rogers invites over a 12 year old neighbor to demonstrate some breakdancing, and ends up trying his hand at some waving and the moonwalk.

Funny, I grew up with the opportunity to choose between childrens television show hosts. Captain Kangaroo, Mr Dressup, The Jolly Green Giant and Mr Rogers and this video simply demonstrates just how creepy Mr Rogers really was in that day and age and why I never chose to watch him as a child.

As a person mortally inflicted with cynicism (I'm of the opinion that every heterosexual couple should have three children, one to replace each of them and a spare in case they misplace one) I do leave my doors unlocked at night, I let my children walk unaccompanied to school and I take a hand in not only raising my neighbour's kids, but in teaching my neighbours that I expect them to help raise mine.

Oh, and I managed to get a two for one deal on the spare and even with that buffer I would refresh the lot of them if they found Mr Rogers entertaining.

In today's day and age, it's a shame that we have to think that someone this nice to kids and others has some sinister plan behind them, but honestly it's the safest way to go. I'd much rather think some nice guy is a creep then have my daughter abducted.

    Oh, and Wahoo1967, i agree.

Mr. Rogers was a symbol of all that WAS really good in my childhood. It was soooooo good that I felt funny watching it. How was this man so NICE?
My parents weren't even that nice....ever!

I wish that I could've shown my kids this show, updated of course. I'd love to share with them a time and place (my childhood) where you really could trust your neighbor, your police officers, your firemen and local persons of leadership like, hey maybe your mayor or even your principal. That would be like really cool dude! Such a shame that I won't even let my 4 yr old in the back yard alone. I sure as hell wished I lived in Mr. Roger's neighborhood. I really would love to live in his neighborhood today, or at least be able to provide my kids with that safe and secure invironment....make's me wonder how many of the cinics leave their cars and homes unlocked at night or even feel comfortable opening their front door to a stranger....sucks not living in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood, doesn't it?

I'm not saying there's anything creepy about Mr. Rogers, I used to watch him all the time. I was more thinking about the break dancing. I don't like it and never really have cared for it. I'm old enough to remember when there was no break dancing, and really, I like that world better. I pretty much feel the same way about rap and hip hop. Not my cup of tea. I can see why people get fascinated by it, because it is different, but I just feel that seeing Mr. Rogers do it...well, I guess it just seems like he's pandering (to what, I don't know).

I have the feeling that Mr. Rogers was really the way he appeared on the shows: a sincerely kind person. It's funny, and a little sad, to see that today's society is so cynical that we all expect him to do something bad.
